Zonder God
1916
A rugged, bearded figure—resembling the famous author Leo Tolstoy—clutches a staff against a dreamy backdrop of purple clouds and a pale sun in this striking 1916 poster. Designed by Eric Romman to advertise a Swedish touring production of Tolstoy's play 'Without God' (Utan Gud) featuring Narin Svanström, the artwork uses bold, graphic lines and dramatic typography to capture the intense spiritual themes of the play. The stylized figure and flowing robes give it a timeless, almost biblical quality. While often associated with the emerging Art Deco movement, its flowing lines also hint at the fading Art Nouveau style, making it a fascinating bridge between two artistic eras.
