La sala de guardia
Probably 1847
Ernest Meissonier was famous for his obsession with historical accuracy, and you can see it in the intricate details of these 17th-century soldiers taking a break in a dimly lit guard room. Notice the soldier in the foreground with his bright red pants and striped hat, casually leaning over a table while his comrades look on—perhaps they're in the middle of a high-stakes card game. The heavy cracking across the surface, known as craquelure, shows its age, but the scene of military life off the battlefield remains vivid and engaging. Meissonier spent hours perfecting tiny details like the texture of the slashed yellow doublet and the armor, making his small-scale works feel like frozen moments in time.
