Knielende Man
1916
Ernst Barlach’s 1916 sketch captures a figure so huddled in a heavy cloak he looks more like a ringing bell than a man. With his head thrown back and face turned to the heavens, this kneeling figure seems caught between desperate prayer and silent suffering—a fitting mood for the middle of World War I. Notice the massive, gnarled hands resting on his knees; Barlach was a sculptor first, and you can feel the heavy volume of the body beneath those thick, sweeping strokes. It’s a raw, emotional snapshot of human vulnerability, stripped of all unnecessary detail.
