Anthomedusae. – Flower Jellyfish
1904
Ernst Haeckel’s 1904 plate from *Kunstformen der Natur* turns microscopic marine life into a symmetrical dreamscape. These 'flower jellyfish' (Anthomedusae) look less like sea creatures and more like intricate lace doilies or alien chandeliers, with their delicate tentacles branching out in perfect radial patterns. Haeckel was a biologist first, but his obsession with symmetry made these scientific illustrations a massive hit with Art Nouveau designers. You can see why—these ghostly, floating organisms look like they belong in a Victorian wallpaper catalog just as much as a biology textbook.
