Bather with Hat

Bather with Hat by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1923

Kirchner was obsessed with escaping modern civilization to live a 'primitive' life in nature, and this sketch captures that wild energy perfectly. A nude bather in a wide-brimmed hat sits in the foreground, her form defined by loose, sweeping lines, while she glances back with a look of mild alarm. Beside her, a second figure is rendered as a dark, heavy mass of cross-hatching, almost melting into the scratchy, chaotic trees behind them. This is German Expressionism at its finest—Kirchner didn't care about realistic beauty; he used jagged, frantic strokes to convey raw emotion and tension. Even though this dates to 1923 during his Swiss exile, his artistic nerves were clearly still wide awake.
