Bathing Nude with Sailboat
1913
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures the fleeting energy of a summer day with this frantic, scribbled sketch of a nude bather and a distant sailboat. As a founding member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, Kirchner ditched realistic perfection for raw emotion, using jagged blue lines and sudden bursts of orange to make the figure feel alive and vibrating. It looks less like a formal portrait and more like a quick, passionate note jotted down in a sketchbook while the sun beat down.
