Bathing Women (Moritzburg)
1909
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and his fellow Die Brücke rebels spent their summers at the Moritzburg lakes near Dresden, shedding their clothes and societal norms to paint freely in the wild. Here, he captures two bathers with jagged, electric red outlines and unnatural blue skin, completely ditching realistic proportions for raw emotional energy. This bold, angular style was a deliberate middle finger to traditional academic art, embracing a raw, almost primitive aesthetic that helped define the explosive energy of German Expressionism.
