Farmhouses by the Water (Fehmarn)
1908
Kirchner spent the summer of 1908 on the island of Fehmarn, and this sketch shows why he loved it. As a founder of the German Expressionist group 'Die Brücke' (The Bridge), he rejected stiff academic rules. Instead of careful shading, he used frantic, jagged lines to make the farmhouses and their water reflections look like they're vibrating with energy. It feels less like a finished picture and more like a snapshot of his racing mind—capturing the raw, chaotic feeling of the landscape rather than just its physical appearance.
