Kneeling Nude
1905
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner attacks the paper with frantic, scratchy lines to capture a kneeling figure in this raw 1905 sketch. As a founding member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, he threw out perfect proportions in favor of pure energy. The figure looks almost like they are vibrating, trapped in a web of dark strokes that emphasize the tension of the pose rather than the smoothness of skin. It's a perfect example of how these rebels wanted to show what they felt, not just what they saw.
