Head of Dr. Bauer, Color Stick II by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1933

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a founding member of the wild German Expressionist group Die Brücke, created this intense portrait of Dr. Bauer in 1933, right as the political climate in Europe was turning dark. The face is split dramatically into a sickly yellow mask and a deep purple shadow, with piercing blue eyes that look almost startled. The jagged, woodcut-like lines give the man a fractured, anxious vibe, reflecting the artist's own fear as the Nazis soon labeled his work 'degenerate art,' leading to his tragic suicide just a few years later.
