Sertigstraße in Winter

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

1924

Sertigstraße in Winter by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1924

Kirchner fled the horrors of World War I and his own mental breakdown by moving to the Swiss Alps, specifically the Sertig valley near Davos. This woodcut captures that refuge, but with his signature frantic energy—the trees look like jagged lightning bolts and the mountains loom aggressively. Even though it's a peaceful winter scene with a horse-drawn sleigh, the sharp, carved lines make the landscape feel alive and slightly dangerous. It’s a perfect example of how Expressionists didn't just paint what they saw, but what they felt.
