Stafelalp with Altein and Tinzenhorn
1918
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner carved this dramatic Alpine scene into a woodblock while recovering from a nervous breakdown during World War I. Fleeing the war, he settled in the Swiss mountains, and you can feel his intense emotions in every jagged, angular line. The dark, looming peak of the Altein dominates the tiny, huddled houses below, making nature look powerful and almost threatening rather than peaceful. It’s a raw, high-contrast snapshot of a man finding solace—and perhaps a bit of fear—in the wild landscape.
