Cimitero della foresta

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

1933

Cimitero della foresta by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1933

Imagine walking through a forest where the trees look like jagged green crystals and the sky is a deep, electric blue. That’s the world of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s 'Waldfriedhof' (Forest Cemetery). Created in 1933 during his self-imposed exile in Switzerland, this woodcut print uses bold, blocky shapes to turn a graveyard into a stylized, almost cartoonish landscape. Kirchner was a founding member of the German Expressionist group 'Die Brücke,' and he loved to distort reality to show raw emotion. Sadly, this peaceful scene was made just as the Nazis declared his art 'degenerate,' forcing him into isolation—making this quiet forest feel like a refuge from a chaotic world.
