Two Naked Women in the Forest with Cat
1921
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner throws us into a jagged, high-contrast forest where the trees and bodies seem carved from the same rough wood. This 1921 woodcut, titled 'Two Naked Women in the Woods with a Cat,' screams German Expressionism. The figures aren't realistic beauties; they are angular and distorted, with faces resembling tribal masks, while a black cat lurks ominously between them. Kirchner, a founder of the 'Die Brücke' (The Bridge) group, loved woodcuts because the medium felt 'primitive' and direct. By chopping away the unnecessary details with a gouge, he left behind only raw, emotional energy and a sense of wild, untamed nature.
