A View in the Dunes
1629
Esaias van de Velde takes us on a blustery stroll through the Dutch countryside in this 1629 masterpiece. You can almost feel the wind whipping through the scraggly tree on the left, which leans dramatically as if bracing against a gale. In the foreground, a gentleman walks his eager hunting dog, while others rest on the sandy dunes under a vast, cloudy sky. This work is a fantastic example of the early Dutch Golden Age style, where artists stopped painting fantasy Italian mountains and started celebrating the humble, realistic beauty of their own flat, sandy homeland.
