The servant and mistress
Step into a romanticized vision of the Middle East, where a wealthy man lounges on plush cushions while his mistress sits nearby, having her elaborate headdress adjusted by a servant. Through the open balcony, a cityscape of gleaming domes and minarets stretches into the distance, showcasing the exotic locales that fascinated 19th-century European artists. Italian painter Ettore Simonetti masterfully captures the textures of rich fabrics and intricate metalwork, creating a scene that feels both intimate and grand.
