Beach at Berck at Low Tide
1877
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures a breezy afternoon at low tide in Berck, France. Notice how the massive, cloud-filled sky dominates the scene, dwarfing the fishing boats resting on the sand and the tiny figures going about their day. Boudin was a master of painting outdoors and actually taught a young Claude Monet to look at the sky and light this way. This loose, sketchy style was a direct precursor to Impressionism, proving that a quick capture of light and atmosphere could be just as powerful as a polished studio piece.
