Sergeant Major of Hussars
1824
Imagine the 'rock stars' of the 19th-century battlefield, and you've got this Hussar sergeant drawn by Eugène Devéria in 1824. With his towering shako hat, fur-lined pelisse jacket slung over one shoulder, and hand resting confidently on his hip, he exudes pure military swagger. Devéria was only 19 when he created this, capturing the essence of French Romanticism which loved drama and bold figures. Hussars were known for being dashing and slightly reckless, wearing uniforms so expensive and elaborate that they were basically the peacocks of the cavalry.
