Outskirts by Eugène Jansson, 1899

Eugène Jansson was so obsessed with the color blue that critics dubbed him 'the painter of Stockholm nights.' Painted from his tiny attic window in the Södermalm district, this moody cityscape captures the quiet magic of the city just as twilight sets in. Notice that tiny sliver of a pink moon hanging in the vast, swirling sky? It's a signature touch of his famous 'blue period,' where he turned ordinary rooftops into dreamlike, almost spiritual visions. He painted this specific view over and over again, chasing the fleeting light of the Nordic dusk before his eyesight eventually began to fail.
