Village Church
ca. 1900
Eugène Laermans captures a hauntingly quiet moment in the Belgian countryside, depicting a white church enclosed by a curving wall that looks almost like a fortress of peace. Simple crosses peek out from the grassy mound inside, suggesting a cemetery that separates the sacred space from the winding dirt road in the foreground. Although categorized as realism, the simplified forms and long, sharp shadows give the scene a dreamlike, almost symbolic atmosphere. Laermans was known as the 'painter of the Brabant peasantry' and usually focused on the harsh struggles of rural life, making this serene, empty landscape a surprisingly tranquil outlier in his portfolio.
