King Charles IV of Spain
Eugenio Lucas Velázquez was practically obsessed with Francisco Goya, and you can see that influence in this lively portrait of King Charles IV. Dressed in his crisp white military uniform and draped in the colorful sashes of his royal orders, the King looks less like a powerful monarch and more like a tired old man ready for a nap. The loose, splashing watercolor technique gives the image a sense of movement, as if the King has just paused while pacing the halls of his palace. It’s a perfect example of the Romantic style, where capturing the mood was far more important than getting every button perfectly straight.
