Scroll of Three Friends of Winter, 88x57, Tianbo
Fan Qi playfully subverts the classic 'Three Friends of Winter' motif by swapping the usual pine and bamboo for vibrant red camellias and fragrant white narcissus. These hardy blooms, along with delicate plum branches, cluster around dark, rugged Taihu rocks, defying the winter chill. The calligraphy at the top explicitly calls them 'distinct friends of the cold,' highlighting the artist's wit and appreciation for nature's resilience. Hanging in the Tianjin Museum, this silk scroll showcases the elegant blend of ink wash and color typical of the early Qing dynasty Jinling School.
