Two sculptures on pedestals by Felice Giani, 18th[-]19th century

Felice Giani whisks us away to a grand, imaginary classical square with this sweeping architectural sketch. Two massive pedestals dominate the foreground, topped by heroic sculptural groups—one featuring a figure raising a hammer and another showing a couple in Roman dress. Tiny figures scattered around the base give us a sense of just how colossal these monuments are meant to be. As a leading Neoclassical decorator, Giani was obsessed with reviving the grandeur of ancient Rome, and this drawing likely served as a proposal for a public space. The loose ink wash gives the whole scene a dreamy, atmospheric quality, like a memory of a civilization that never existed.
