Georges Bizet (1838-1875), compositeur by Felix-Henri Giacomotti, 1865

Meet Georges Bizet, the brilliant French composer best known for *Carmen*, captured here in 1865 looking every bit the dashing bohemian intellectual. With his wild curly hair, stylish blue cravat, and wire-rimmed glasses perched on his nose, he holds a cigar in one hand and gloves in the other, exuding a relaxed confidence. Sadly, Bizet died at just 36, never knowing that *Carmen* would become one of the most performed operas in history. This portrait by Félix-Henri Giacomotti freezes him in his prime, a young genius on the verge of his greatest masterpiece.
