The Sea Lions
1870s
Step into the freezing world of James Fenimore Cooper’s adventure novel *The Sea Lions* with this dramatic engraving by Felix Octavius Carr Darley. Under a starry, icy sky, fur-clad men huddle desperately over a fallen comrade in the snow, while a spear-wielding figure keeps watch nearby. The caption at the bottom adds to the suspense, revealing a race against time as they hope to save the man who cried out just twenty minutes prior. It’s a perfect snapshot of 19th-century illustration, capturing the rugged, high-stakes survival stories that readers of the 1870s couldn't get enough of.
