The Little Girls
1893
Félix Vallotton captures a playground scene that feels a bit like a freeze-frame from a slightly eerie children's book. In 'Les petites filles' (The Little Girls), a group of children cluster together, their clothes a busy mix of stripes, checks, and polka dots that almost swallow them up. The central girl stares out with wide, hollow eyes, giving the scene a surprisingly intense, almost psychological vibe typical of Vallotton's work. He was a master of the woodcut, using stark black-and-white contrasts to turn ordinary moments into graphic, memorable snapshots of late 19th-century life.
