A cavalier
Here stands a dashing 17th-century cavalier, caught in the act of blowing a golden trumpet that seems ready to echo through the dark, wood-paneled hall. Ferdinand Roybet has dressed this figure in a riot of textures: shimmering silver silk, a bright yellow sash, and striped breeches tied with ribbons at the knee. Although it looks like a scene from a swashbuckling novel, Roybet rarely traveled and instead recreated these historical moments in his Paris studio using friends as models. With a sword at his hip and a banner draped from his arm, he looks poised to announce a royal arrival or the start of a duel.
