Black Grouse
1864
Ferdinand von Wright, one of three brothers famous for their bird illustrations, captured this moody Nordic forest scene in 1864. A large male black grouse rests in the foreground moss, his dark feathers shimmering with blue hints and his bright red eye-comb standing out vividly against the earth tones. In the shadows behind the rough pine bark, a female and another male keep watch, creating a sense of quiet tension. This work beautifully blends scientific precision with the romantic atmosphere of the wilderness, typical of the realism movement.
