The Bells by Fernand Khnopff, 1905

Belgian Symbolist Fernand Khnopff creates a hauntingly pale figure draped in a long, textured gown, crowned by a massive, dark, crescent-shaped hat tipped with small bells. The loose, scratchy lines give the character the appearance of a fleeting memory or a ghost from a dream, perfectly capturing the Symbolist obsession with mystery and the subconscious. A handwritten inscription at the bottom dated 1914 dedicates the piece to 'Madame F. Hellens,' suggesting this eerie, jester-like figure was a personal souvenir rather than just a public artwork.
