The disguised ones of the State by Fernand Louis Gottlob, 1905

French illustrator Fernand Louis Gottlob delivers a sharp political jab in this 1905 satirical piece, created during the height of the Art Nouveau movement. We see a portly official in a bicorne hat and military uniform leaning over a balcony, his back turned to the viewer as he looks down upon a crowd. The handwritten caption at the bottom reads, 'Bread, bread, is that what I ask for myself? However, there must be enough for everyone,' highlighting the hypocrisy of leaders who claim selflessness while ignoring the plight of the hungry. Titled 'The Disguised of the State,' the artwork mocks government figures who hide behind uniforms and lofty balconies, completely detached from the reality of the streets below.
