The Attack
1922
Fernand Siméon turns a terrifying train robbery into a high-fashion moment in this 1922 illustration titled 'L'Attentat' (The Hold-up). Part of the 'Modes et Manières d'Aujourd'hui' series published by fashion designer Paul Poiret, this print shows a stylish couple with their hands in the air as a gun is pointed at them from the left. Despite the danger, the woman's oversized checkered coat and cloche hat remain perfectly in place, and even her tiny, terrified dog gets a spotlight under her long skirt. It's a perfect snapshot of the Roaring Twenties, where drama and style collided in the most unexpected places.
