Leda and the Swan

Leda and the Swan by Filippo Falciatore

Zeus certainly had some wild ideas for pick-up lines, as seen in this Baroque take on the myth of Leda. The king of the gods has shapeshifted into a swan to seduce Leda, who sits amidst a wooded landscape draped in vibrant red fabric while the bird nuzzles her neck. Two mischievous cherubs peek out from the shadows on the left, acting as little voyeurs to the divine encounter. While a woman cuddling a giant waterfowl looks a bit strange to modern eyes, this specific moment is legendary—it led to Leda laying eggs that hatched Helen of Troy and the twins Castor and Pollux.
