The lark for May
1896
Florence Lundborg captures the wild energy of spring in this 1896 cover design for the literary magazine *The Lark*. A nude mountain nymph, identified as an 'Oread' at the bottom, stretches ecstatically from a tree branch, her limbs reaching toward the sky in a classic Art Nouveau pose. The bold, swirling typography at the top mirrors the organic curves of the figure and the stylized trees behind her. As a pioneer of the San Francisco Arts and Crafts movement, Lundborg blended classical mythology with modern graphic flair to create a truly iconic image of the 1890s.
