Virgin Annunciate
between 1450 and 1455
Fra Angelico was a monk who refused to paint without praying first, and it shows in the serene face of this Virgin Mary. Dressed in her signature pink and blue robes against a glittering gold background, she looks down at a small red book with a shy, humble expression rather than shock. This panel was likely the right half of a diptych, meant to face an image of the Angel Gabriel delivering his news. It’s a perfect example of the Early Renaissance shift from stiff, scary religious icons to figures that feel genuinely human and approachable.
