Jupiter and Juno on Mount Ida
1784
In this playful Neoclassical scene, the queen of the gods, Juno, is caught in a moment of seduction with her husband Jupiter atop Mount Ida. Based on a design by Giovanni Cipriani and engraved by the master printmaker Francesco Bartolozzi in 1784, the artwork captures a cheeky moment from Homer's Iliad where Juno distracts Zeus (Jupiter) to help the Greeks win the Trojan War. You can spot Jupiter's iconic eagle resting nearby and a couple of mischievous cherubs whispering in the clouds, adding a touch of whimsy to this mythological rendezvous.
