St John The Divine
1592
Saint John looks absolutely startled here, clutching his quill as an angel bursts through the clouds to dictate divine secrets. He’s leaning back in his vibrant red and green robes, gazing up in awe at the heavenly messenger who seems to be urging him to write down the Gospel. The Bassano family was famous for mixing holy scenes with everyday realism, and you can see a lovely, moody landscape peeking through the window behind them. It captures the exact moment of divine inspiration—part spiritual ecstasy, part 'wait, speak slower, I'm trying to take notes!'
