Architectural Capriccio
circa 1770-1780
Francesco Guardi sketches a dreamlike Venetian fantasy where crumbling classical ruins tower over a busy waterfront. Unlike the precise architectural postcards of his rival Canaletto, Guardi’s loose, scribbly lines capture the atmosphere and decay of the city rather than exact details. In the foreground, ducks swim peacefully while figures scramble on the steps, grounding the imaginary ruins in everyday life. This 'capriccio' style allowed artists to mix real landmarks with pure imagination, creating a mood that feels surprisingly modern for the 18th century.
