Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana, Venice
Francesco Guardi captures the bustling energy of Venice with his signature loose, almost impressionistic brushstrokes, a hallmark of the Rococo style. Unlike his rival Canaletto, who painted with strict architectural precision, Guardi preferred to convey the shimmering light and lively atmosphere of the city. You can see gondolas darting across the water in the foreground, while the iconic dome of the Santa Maria della Salute church dominates the skyline. This type of 'veduta,' or view painting, was a must-have souvenir for wealthy tourists on the 18th-century Grand Tour.
