Soldiers Crossing A River

Soldiers Crossing A River by Francesco Simonini

Francesco Simonini was a master of the 'little figures in a big landscape' trend, and this piece is a perfect example. He fills a rugged, rocky valley with a bustling caravan of soldiers and horses wading through a river, framed by a dramatic natural stone arch. While the Rococo period is famous for fluffy clouds and fancy parties, Simonini clearly preferred a bit of adventure, channeling the wild, untamed spirit of earlier landscape painters like Salvator Rosa. Notice the tiny waterfall on the left and the cliffside town on the right—he packed this scene with so much detail you could get lost in it for hours!
