Funeral Procession

Funeral Procession by Francis Danby

Francis Danby was the king of the gloomy landscape, and this scene is a perfect example of his Romantic style. Imagine a massive crowd marching through a rocky, moonlit valley—the flickering torches create an eerie, fiery glow against the looming, shadowy mountains. Danby was actually a bit of a tragic figure himself, abandoning his family and dying in poverty, which perhaps fueled the intense emotion in his work. He was good friends with John Martin, another painter who loved apocalyptic scenes, and you can definitely see that influence here in the sheer, overwhelming scale of the darkness.
