Old King Cole
1880s
Francis Donkin Bedford brings the classic nursery rhyme to life with this whimsical 1880s illustration, showing a jolly king lounging on his throne. He's calling for his pipe and bowl—though that jug on the floor is suspiciously labeled 'Whiskey'! Three fiddlers in matching red outfits play away while tiny cats dance at the king's feet, capturing the 'merry old soul' vibe perfectly. The decorative border at the top adds a fun narrative layer with a parade of animals, hinting at the festive atmosphere of the poem.
