Devout profession

Francisco de Goya

1796-1797

Devout profession by Francisco de Goya, 1796-1797

Welcome to the weirdest graduation ceremony in history! In this print from his famous *Los Caprichos* series (plate 70), Goya takes a savage swipe at religious rituals and superstition. Instead of a holy ordination, a young man is being 'initiated' by two terrifying, hag-like figures who are literally measuring his skull with compasses while he sits atop a demonic beast. The title 'Devout Profession' is pure sarcasm—Goya is mocking how blind faith and dogma can turn people into monsters, quite literally, as seen by the eerie floating heads in the murky depths below.
