Ferdinand VII (1784–1833), When Prince of Asturias
Here we see a young Ferdinand VII, looking rather dashing in his powdered wig and royal sashes, long before he earned the nickname 'The Felon King.' Goya captures him with loose, energetic brushstrokes that make the silk of his coat shimmer, contrasting with the dark, moody background. It’s fascinating to look at this youthful, almost innocent face and know that this man would later restore the Spanish Inquisition and drive Goya into exile. The oval framing gives it an intimate feel, like a secret glimpse into the Spanish court before everything went wrong.
