Might not the pupil know more
1796-1797
Goya serves up a masterclass in sarcasm with this plate from his famous 'Los Caprichos' series. Here, a donkey dressed as a scholar instructs a younger donkey, prompting the caption: 'Will the pupil know more?' It’s a savage roast of the Spanish education system, implying the teachers are literal asses who know nothing. Created in the late 1790s, this series was Goya's way of mocking the ignorance and corruption of his time. The fact that the student donkey looks just as confused as the teacher suggests that nobody is learning anything at all!
