Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo (1785–1841), the Architect
1820
Francisco de Goya captured his friend, the architect Tiburcio Pérez y Cuervo, with a striking mix of intimacy and drama in 1820. Set against a deep, almost void-like black background, the subject stands with arms confidently crossed, his white shirt glowing against the darkness. Goya’s loose, expressive brushstrokes give the portrait a sense of immediacy, as if Tiburcio just turned to look at the painter. This was painted during Goya's later years, a time when his work became increasingly dark and introspective, yet here he shows a warm, human connection.
