Fire
ca. 1740
François Boucher was totally obsessed with 'Chinoiserie'—a trendy 18th-century European fantasy of Asian life—and this whimsical drawing is a perfect example. Titled 'Fire,' it’s part of a series representing the four elements, showing a cozy scene where a standing figure pours tea over a brazier while a seated companion gestures eagerly. Perched on a shelf above is a grinning Buddha-like figure, watching over hanging pots and a sign with gibberish text meant to look like Chinese characters. It’s a charming snapshot of how the Rococo era loved to mix exotic imagination with everyday domestic comfort.
