Daphnis and Chloe by François Gérard, ca. 1824

Think of this as the ancient Greek version of a sweet couple's picnic, but with more drama. The shepherd Daphnis is keeping watch over his sleeping girlfriend, Chloe, holding a flower crown he likely just made for her. It’s a scene from a famous ancient romance novel about two kids growing up together in the wild. François Gérard, a top Neoclassical painter, nailed the 'ideal beauty' look for the figures, but check out those loose, swirly brushstrokes in the trees and that bright blue sea in the back—he was definitely letting a little Romantic emotion slip into his classical style!
