The Spinners of Fondi
1845
Belgian artist François-Joseph Navez traveled to Italy and fell in love with the local culture, resulting in this vibrant scene of daily life in the town of Fondi. You can see the women holding long distaffs—tools used for holding wool or flax while spinning—dressed in colorful, traditional folk costumes that were all the rage for artists of the time. The woman in the center stares directly at you, breaking the fourth wall, while a baby naps in a basket and a man gestures animatedly nearby. It’s a perfect example of how Neoclassical artists began to blend classical composition with romanticized, everyday subjects.
