Saint Cecilia Of Rome

François-Joseph Navez

Saint Cecilia Of Rome by François-Joseph Navez, 1824

Meet Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, looking like she's about to headline a heavenly concert in this 1824 Neoclassical gem by François-Joseph Navez. She wears a crown of roses and a flowing blue veil, gazing calmly while an angel behind her plucks a golden harp. A cheeky little cherub in the foreground holds open a songbook, practically begging to join the choir. Navez was a top student of Jacques-Louis David, and you can see that training in the smooth, idealized figures and dramatic lighting that make this religious scene feel almost like a stage play.
