The FlagBearer', 'zh-CN
18th century
François Levaillant, a French explorer with a penchant for African wildlife, captured this quirky bird in the late 18th century. The bird, dubbed 'Le porte lambeau' (roughly 'The Rag Bearer'), sports a dramatic crest and a bizarre, floppy wattle hanging from its beak like a misplaced accessory. Perched on a stark, leafless branch, the illustration feels like a page torn from a vintage field guide, showcasing the delicate hand-colored engraving techniques of the era. Levaillant was famous for his vivid, sometimes theatrical descriptions of birds, and this little guy certainly has character.
